Class of 1957; 50th Year Reunion
by Carol Ring - Tuesday, March 25, 2008
The class of '57 held their 50th reunion the weekend of August 17-19, 2007. Forty-eight classmates and their spouses journeyed from as far away as California, British Columbia and Alberta to celebrate this special occasion.
A meet and greet was held in the SJHS cafeteria Friday evening with special guest and former Principal Dennis Knibb in attendance. Classmates had the opportunity to view the video of the implosion of the Saint John General Hospital and participate in a tour of the High School while enjoying an evening of socializing and great refreshments.
Saturday morning a number of classmates and spouses took advantage of a two hour guided coach tour of Saint John. That afternoon we enjoyed a two hour river boat cruise of the Saint John and Kennebecasis Rivers. To complete the day's activities, eighty classmates and guests were treated to a buffet banquet at the Saint John Marina. Special guests for the occasion were retired teachers Miss Ruth Morrell and Mr. Jack Crammond, and President of the SJHS Alumni, Dr. David Moir and his wife Claire. The evening was highlighted with a spirited sing song, a rousing rendition of 'RINGO', and musical selections by Freda (Brownell) Gillen and Harry Brittain.
Our reunion weekend concluded with a Sunday morning service at Germain Street Baptist Church. The service was mostly conducted by members of the class. Dr Bruce Redding's sermon 'A Life Worth Living' modeled the High School's motto VITA VITALIS. Canon Jim Garland read several scriptural passages and offered prayers. The morning service also featured a solo by Dawn (Short) Gilchrist, a quartet of classmates Dawn, Gerry Mabey, Harry, and Loretta (Lidstone) Mahaffey, and a saxophone offertory by Harry. A reception followed bringing to a successful termination a most memorable reunion of the class of '57.
