Happy Easter from sjhigh.ca

by Karissa Donkin - Sunday, March 27, 2005

It's that time of the year again - Easter! So while many of you kids are enjoying what the Easter bunny left you (mmm, candy...), read on to find out some fun facts about Easter, as well as a crazy story that was composed during an Easter insomnia/chocolate binge.

Fun Facts about Easter
  • Easter is a Christian holiday. For many religions it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Easter eggs are a symbol of new life. Even before Easter was a holiday, the Egyptians and Persians used to exchange eggs in the Spring. These eggs were painted bright colours, such as the ones we see in modern times. They chose to exchange eggs because they believed that Earth was hatched from an egg.
  • The idea of the Easter bunny is based on a German folktale of a woman who decorated eggs for her children to find when there was no food. Once they found them, the legend says they saw a large bunny hopping away!
  • "The date of Passover is variable as it is dependent on the phases of the moon." That's why the date of Easter varies from year to year, simply because of what phase the moon is in.
  • Many people believe that when eating a chocolate bunny, the ears should always be eaten first.
Now that you know the reasonable and probably accurate story on some popular Easter traditions, let me tell you the REAL story about a friendly rabbit that visits us during the Easter holidays. That's right, the real story of the Easter Bunny: The SJHS version.
