Opportunity for new Rugby Players
by Mr. Warr - Sunday, November 16, 2008
For any grade 9 or 10 student interested in playing rugby (and a handful of grade 11's), there is a wonderful opportunity for you this upcoming spring.
A group of 24 players and three adult chaperones will be doing a 5 day exchange with Rockland District Secondary School, of Rockland, ON. This exciting exchange program is organized by YMCA Youth Exchanges and funded by Heritage Canada. SJHS players will board with Rockland students from April 28th to May 3rd. Rockland players will be visiting our city and high school two weeks prior, April 14th to April 19th.
Coaches Warr and McPherson want all players interested in trying out to start getting in shape. That includes all returning players that benefited from last year's exchange with Woodroffe High School who do not qualify for the 2009 exchange. "We want to ride the high of a successful football season, encouraging some good athletes at SJHS to try something new".
Without looking too far ahead, if there is a lot of interest in our program this year, establishing a junior team is a very realistic goal. Rockland's group will also be made up primarily with grade 9 and 10 boys. It will be a fun, exciting, and non-threatening way to get introduced to the game of rugby. A meeting for interested new players will be announced in the near future.
