Biology class visits Huntsman Marine Centre
by Mrs Mary Savoie - Monday, May 25, 2009
Oh! What a day ……. for learning! This month, Mrs. Savoie's IB Biology 111 class went to the Huntsman Marine Centre in St. Andrew's. The students had a great time going out on the boat into the Passemequady Bay. Hands on learning was the order of the day!
The students were allowed to use and operate the temperature and salinity probes, use the Secchi disc to determine light penetration, and look, touch and even name hundreds of marine invertebrates such as Sea stars, sea anemone, scallops, sea cucumber, sea urchin and many more. Back at the lab, more organisms were observed, classified, sketched, and experimented with.
No invertebrates were harmed during these experiments. A good day was had by all!
