SJHS Chemists Have a Cool Time at Rising Tides Festival

SJHS Chemists were the opening act for the bands at the Rising Tides Music Festival on Saturday June 13th. They warmed the crowd up with explosions and flames and then cooled them off with liquid nitrogen demonstrations and home-made ice cream! Great fun was had by all on a bright, sunny day in beautiful King Square. Due to many requests for the ice cream recipe, we are re-printing it here.

Zippy Ice Cream

One 1-qt zip-loc style storage bag
One zip-loc style sandwich bag
4c crushed ice
½ c coarse or rock salt

¼ c milk
¼ c whipping cream
2 tbsp sugar
½ tsp vanilla

Put half the ice and salt in the larger bag. Put the other ingredients in the sandwich bag, squeeze out most of the air and seal. Put the sandwich bag into the larger bag with the ice and salt, squeeze out most of the air and seal. Squeeze and shake the bag for five minutes. Pour out any water, add the remaining ice and salt and shake and squeeze for five more minutes. Make sure that there is no salt around the mouth of the inner bag, open it, add your favourite topping and enjoy.
