High school: Kennebecasis High girls, Saint John High boys, cruise to victory in semifinals

SAINT JOHN - Home-field advantage played a big role for a pair of No. 1 seeds from the south in the regional semifinal round of the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association rugby playoffs Tuesday.In Saint John, the hometown Greyhounds jumped to a19-point lead at the half en route to a 26-14 victory over the Fredericton Black Kats in boys action.

Nathan Dickens, Matt Doucet, Jordan Lawrence and Dan Duplessis each scored a try in the win while Duplessis added three conversions.

Doug Nash scored both tries for the Black Kats, which were both converted by Dustin Hall.

In AAA girls action, the Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders downed the Black Kats 29-5 in that regional semifinal at Arthur Miller Field in Rothesay.

Megan Thorpe scored a pair of tries in the win while teammate Martine Chanell scored a try and booted a convert.

Katie Gallant and Brittannie Watson added the other tries for the Crusaders, who will host the winner of today's other South-West regional semifinal between Simonds and Carleton North.

That contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Bristol.

The South-West regional finals will take place Friday in both the boys and girls divisions. The games determine the regional seeds for next Monday's provincial semifinal games against the top two teams for the North-East regionals.

In North-East playoff action Tuesday, Belleisle downed Clement Cormier 48-10. Vanessa Duffley scored three tries and added four conversions for the winners while Tori White added a pair of tries. Madison Howland and Chelsey Brown added the other tries. Belleisle meets Bernice MacNaughton Thursday.

In boys play today, Belleisle faces James M. Hill in playoff action.

The provincial championship games go June 4.

Meanwhile, the consolation playoffs continue today in the Southern Conference.

Rothesay Netherwood travels to Simonds and St. Stephen hosts Sussex on the boys side while in girls action, St. Stephen makes the trek to Rothesay Netherwood while Saint John is at Harbour View.

All those games are also slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
