by Ms. Lutz - Thursday, March 15, 2012

Matthew Florczynski, IB Diploma graduate from Saint John High School's class of 2006, has recently been awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) for his research on how human brains store and retrieve memories.

Matthew is a Masters of Sciences candidate at the University of Toronto's Institute of Medical Science, where he is currently exploring the effects of certain proteins on one's ability to remember and learn from experiences. His research may have a very important impact on the study and treatment of neurological diseases.
For that work, Matthew was recently named one of four recipients of the Andre Hamer Postgraduate Prizes, awarded to the most outstanding candidates in NSERC's postgraduate scholarship competitions. He and the other NSERC winners were honoured by the Governor General at a ceremony in Ottawa February 27.
Congratulations, Matthew, from all of us here at Saint John High.
