Saint John High School Alumni Honors it's Past...and Continues to Support its Future!
by Sherry Golding, Class of 1981 - Thursday, August 9, 2012
This summer marked the 30th anniversary of our very strong and supportive alumni association. A Grand Reunion was held August 3rd - 5th. Dr. David Moir, a founder of this association, served as its President for 30 years. He was honoured at the Alumni dinner with a plaque dedicating the Saint John High School Board room in his honour. The dinner was lovely and Mr. Steve Murphy travelled all the way from CTV and Halifax, Nova Scotia to serve as Emcee for the event. He may or may not forgive us for digging out some of his old high school pictures!!
On Friday afternoon, a family BBQ, was held at the Irving Nature Park. The cloudy weather could not dampen the spirits of the alumni and volunteers who attended. On Friday evening, a Wine and Cheese Reception was held in the David Ring Gymnasium. It was a beautiful affair with many alumni getting to see each other and catch up. Many looked like they could have chatted into the wee hours. However, that same evening the SJHS Alumni Variety Show was held in the Dennis Knibb Auditorium and received rave reviews from the attendees. Former Teacher and Principal, Mr. Barry Harbinson donned his tux to Emcee the event and did a fabulous job introducing each of the acts, representing many different eras and musical tastes.
Prior to the dinner on Saturday night, many alumni took part in Breakfast at the City Market, the bus tour or the river boat cruise. It was a spectacular day, culminating in a lovely dinner at the Trade and Convention Centre. On Sunday morning, alumni were invited to partake in an Ecumenical Church Service at Trinity Anglican Church.
All in all, it was a wonderful weekend with people travelling from as far away as Scotland to attend. This has been the second Grand Reunion that I have had the privilege to attend and it is an honour to work at a school that has such a dedicated alumni working on its behalf. The highlight of any Saint John High School event is to see Mr. Dennis Knibb continuing to work tirelessly in support of the school and it was a pleasure to work with him in organizing this reunion!
Many thanks to the committee members who made this event happen; Dennis Knibb (Alumni Association Treasurer), Richard Thorne (Programme and Events, as well as Editor, SJHS Alumni News ), Bruce Grant (Grand Reunion Chair), Dick Harrison (Finance), Barry Harbinson (Registration), Sandra Barrett (Media Liaison), Peter Josselyn (Marketing), Linda Tobias and Sheila French (Dinner), David McPherson (Wine and Cheese), Marijke Blok (Principal, Wine and Cheese), and Sherry Golding (Vice-Principal and Variety Show).
Many thanks as well to all of the teachers, staff and students who came forward to help with these events, as well as to the attendees for coming to the reunion and making it such a wonderful time for all!
