2013 NBIAA Titles for Hounds Swim Team
by C Sullivan - Sunday, December 15, 2013
The Greyhound swim team had an outstanding performance at the NBIAA provincial championship meet hosted by SJHS at the Canada Games Aquatic Center on Saturday Dec 14/2013. SJHS finished second to FHS, 366 points to 333 points. ESN was third with 180 points. The twenty school competition comprised more then 225 athletes that qualified through regional competitons two weeks ago. FHS and SJHS split the banners at the meet, with FHS winning the Junior Divisions and SJHS winning the Senior divisions.
Cameron Mccurdy's Senior boys squad fought hard all day. It finally came down to the last race, the 4x100 freestyle relay. Winner take all. (Final tally SJHS 97, FHS 93) Riley Higdon's Senior Girls squad were heavy underdogs coming into the weekend. With personal bests all over the pool, they were the surprise of the competiton. (SJHS 87, FHS 73)
The Junior squads for SJHS performed very well. The junior girls placed second to FHS under captain Emily Whitcomb (113 to 82 points). This was an improvement over 2012's 3rd place finish and closer still to the strong FHS team. The junior boys placed a respectable third place (67 pts) led by capatin Robert Scott behind FHS (87) and ESN (85).
Several SJHS junior swimming records fell this weekend: Isabelle, Janelle, Emilee and Emily broke both the 4x50 Medley and 4x50 Free records (BY A LOT!). Emilee Hoellwarth also set new standards in the 50 & 100 backstroke. Isabelle Nickerson broke the 50 & 100 breaststroke marks. Janelle Holt crushed the 50 Freestyle record.
SJHS won 10 gold and 2 silver in the 12 relay events. Individual Gold medals were won by Emilee Hoellwarth (JR 50 Back), Janelle Holt (Jr 100 IM & 50 Free) and Morgan Easton (Sr 50 Breast). Silver medals were collected by Keeley Shea (SR 50 Breast), Isabelle Nickerson (JR 50 & 100 Breast), Emily Whitcomb (Jr 50 Free), Riley Higdon (Sr 50 Back), and Morgan Easton (Sr 100 Breast). Individual Bronze medals were won by Matthew Sullivan (Sr 50 & 100 Free), Gregor Sullivan (Jr 50 & 100 Back), Gillian Davidson (Sr 50 Free), Sam Irvine (SR100 Fly), Emilee Hoellwarth (JR 100 Back), Ryan Wilcox (Sr 200 IM), Allie Ruigrok (Sr 50 Back), Keeley Shea (Sr 100 Breast), Gavin Adams (Sr 200 Free).
Thanks go out to parents, swimmers, students, volunteers and sponsors for the assistance and support that made the competition run so smoothly. Gary Losier, Robert Taylor, Mr Nickerson, Mr Holt, and the Macmackin's were a fantastic officiating crew. The CGAC provided a top class facility and a great staff. And finally...THANK YOU to coach Patti Macmackin. Thankyou.
