SJHS Celebrates a Service of Remembrance â€" 2014
by Mr. Jim McNiven - Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Monday, Nov. 10th, the staff and students of SJHS came together to remember those from our school and throughout our nation, who have served, fought, and died on our behalf of Canada, defending the values we cherish every day.
The service was a compilation of music, readings, and video presentations, with the service convener being Grade 12 student, Sam Landry. Ms. Wood's Canadian History 12 class presented a video selection focused on former SJHS students who enlisted to serve in both WWI, WWII, Korea, and Afghanistan, and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Mr. McNiven's IB History 12 class paid special tribute to 2004 Graduate, David Greenslade, who died in Afghanistan in 2007 at the age of 20. Mr. Donald Greenslade was in attendance and was given a warm reception by the entire school body. Grade 12 students Allie Ruigrok, Caleb McKend, Hannah Ingalls, and Chelsea Roy paid tribute through a personal essay reading and a reciting of John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields".
Thanks goes out to Mrs. Gallagher and her SJHS Concert Choir who paid tribute to past veterans through the singing of three musical pieces. Both Principal Mrs. Van Horne and SRC President Ben Peterson laid wreaths on behalf of the staff and students, respectively, of SJHS. Special thanks goes out to SJHS staff EA Nathan Davis and his Cadets, under the command of Jordan Clarke, who acted as the Honour Guard for the service, as well as Mrs. Young who, along with her IB Art 12 students, put together the service program.
