Memorable Evening at the 2015 SJHS Baccalaureate Service
by Susanne Sutton - Sunday, June 14, 2015
The annual SJHS Baccalaureate Service celebrating this year's graduates was held at Trinity Church on Sunday 31 May at 7 pm. Following a prelude by the SJHS String Ensemble, the choir processed behind the church's Paschal Candle, carried by Matt Brown. Lauren Hogan led the blessing of the light, and then candle lighters moved down the aisles lighting people's tapers until the church was aglow; this was meant to represent the light of every graduate that he or she will take to wherever life leads. The service included prayers from the Buddhist, Christian, Greek Orthodox, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Unitarian Universalist traditions, and prayers were offered in English, Mandarin, Spanish and French, the languages taught at the school. The choir sang several memorable songs, and there were amazing solos by Catherine Kennedy (voice), Michelle Suk (piano) and Sadra Sarbazi (tombak). The highlight of the evening was the address given by Mr. Greg Theobald, who retired last year after 37 years at Saint John High; he reminded graduates of the significance of history in our province and in our lives but also kept the mood light with his characteristic puns. Beautiful flowers arrangements were donated in memory of former student David Willis and by our Alumni and SRC. The reception following the service offered cake featuring the suit and white dress photos. It was a memorable evening for all involved.
