Lauren Hogan took full advantage of all Saint John High School had to offer
Aiming for a Bachelor of Science from McGill University, Lauren Hogan has studied her way to graduate at the top of her class.
"I'm a big studier," she said."I usually start studying up to two weeks in advance. I use review sheets to summarize everything and as I rewrite everything out it helps me memorize the material. It's important to condense everything so it's easier to remember."
It takes a huge amount of discipline and determination to study long hours and absorb the curriculum. In Hogan's generation, every subject in high school and also university is centred on test taking. Once perfected, the skill can ensure success in every academic area of study.
Hogan earned a major entrance scholarship from McGill University in Montreal for her academic excellence.
"It will be a big change from Saint John,"she said in regards to her choice of post-secondary education. "I grew up on the west side of Saint John and I've lived here my whole life."
Though Hogan is confident in all of her subject areas, biology is one subject that captured her interest.
"I hope one day I'll maybe pursue something in the medical field,"she said.
McGill offers one of the best science programs in Canada.
Apart from her studies, she also loves to play volleyball with the school team. She was captain of the Saint John High School volleyball team and she was chosen as most valuable player as well.
"Athletics are a way to release stress from school. It's a big part of my life," she said.
One of the assets that Hogan had throughout her schooling at Saint John High School is the fact that her mother teaches math at the school.
"At first, I thought it would be a little awkward, but now it doesn't bother me. I kind of like having her there,"she said.
All throughout her youth Hogan remembers learning a lot about math and other subjects from her mother.
She found that it was important to take a variety of subjects and embrace the large size of the school. Saint John High School is able to offer many more courses than some of the other high schools in New Brunswick. Hogan took full advantage of all the opportunities.
"I took economics, accounting and law as well. The school offers a lot of specialty courses that give you real life skills,"she said.
After being so highly involved in the school, Hogan will look back at her time at Saint John High School as both challenging and positive.
