SJHS Student Representing Canada in Greek Chess Tournament
by Joe Boyd - Wednesday, July 15, 2015
SJHS student Sam Song will be representing Canada in an international youth chess tournament in Porto Carras, Greece this coming October. This is the culmination of a long series of tournament victories for Sam, beginning with the Saint John Ed Centre in March, the Provincial Championship in Tracadie-Sheila in April, and the Canadian Chess Challenge in Quebec City in May. Sam won every game he played in these tournaments. Most recently Sam came in a close second at the Canadian Youth Chess Challenge in Windsor, Ontario earlier this month, just a half-point behind the winner, chess prodigy Richard Wang - the 16th highest rated player in Canada. It was this last performance that qualified Sam to represent Canada in the World Youth Chess Championship in Greece. Each country may register only one player in each category (under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 years old, open and girls): this victory puts Sam firmly among the elite young chess champions in Canada. Way to go Sam - we'll be rooting for you!
