SJHS SCHOOL INCENTIVE POLICY

Attendance and Academic Conditions Leading to Exam Exemption

(You may apply for an exemption under EITHER Attendance or Academics)

An exemption (1 per semester) is a privilege earned by a student based on:

Attendance Condition: An exam in a course may be exempted with a maximum of 5 absences per semester in any one class. More than 5 absences in any class will result in ineligibility to exempt in all classes. Students must be passing all 5 courses in order to obtain an Attendance Exemption.

Criteria:

  1. Exceptions that will not count as absences:

-School sponsored co/extra-curricular activities

-reasons connected to school/district responsibilities (i.e. late school bus)

  1. 2 Tardies= 1 Absence
  2. 5 total absences per class is the maximum allowed to receive the exemption.
  3. School suspensions will count as absences. In school suspensions will be marked as excused.
  4. You may not exempt any course you are failing.
  5. An IB student is not eligible to exempt any IB exam in the exam year.
  6. A subject may only be exempted once per school year.

Academic Condition: An exam in a course in which a student has achieved a mark of 90% or higher may be exempted provided they are passing all of their other classes.

Criteria:

  1. Students may exempt an exam in a class where their final class mark is at least 90%.
  2. Students may exempt an exam if they are passing all of their courses.
  3. Eligible students may choose to exempt an exam and also choose to still write with the understanding that the exam would only count if it improves their standing.
  4. An IB student is not eligible to exempt any IB exam in the exam year.
  5. A subject may only be exempted once per school year.
